Earthquake maremmas

Greeting loyal readers.  Mummy was telling daddy this morning on the phone, as daddy is in Wellington, that she was awoken twice this morning by an earthquake.  Now, loyal readers may or may not know that there has been some very large earthquakes in New Zealand in Canturbury in the last few years.

So, this morning mummy went on to the Geonet website to look at what times the earthquakes struck.  Well, imagine her surprise when she read that in the time between 9:45:42 pm, Thursday 11th October 2012 and 9:04:34 am, Friday 12th October 2012, there were 30 earthquakes recorded in New Zealand.

Now mummy spent 20 years living in Wellington, where the “Big One” was always going to happen and everyone is very aware and prepared for the possibility of an earthquake.

Something to think about. Love Nellie and Jasper the two bestest maremmas in all the land. Do your mummy and daddy have a civil defense kit, just in case an earthquake or some other natural disaster happens?  Mummy says she has but there is always room for improvement.

  1. Ooo. Earthquakes sound scary. Our Mummy has relatives in New Zealand so she always worries when she hears about them. Some of the family were in the Christchurch earthquake and one of them just left a shop as it fell down which must have been frightening. Stay safe furfriends and look after your hoomans.

Oh my!! did your Mommy actually feel it or did she just have a premonition? That is soooo freaky! We should have a kit made but knowing my Mom…if we did she would never find it!

  5. thank goodness you are safe! My mummy grew up in California, which is also prone to many earthquakes, both big and small. She does not miss them! We have 2 emergency disaster kits, one for the house and one for the car. Around here we are more likely to need them for hurricanes or ice storms. We have been blessed to not need our kits for the past couple of years, so mummy had to replace much of the food supplies this spring. she said they were expired!

  7. The Producer moved to Wellington and the first thing she read was the back of the telephone directory listing the items in the civil defence kit. She nearly left the country again – but she didn’t. the big one didn’t come and she loved it.
However, you have just reminded her of one reason why we haven’t yet returned 🙂
    Glad you’re safe.

  8. I’m in San Francisco a lot, but somehow always miss the earthquakes (thank goodness!). We, in Portland Oregon, are also under the gun for a potential ‘big one’ and no, I don’t have a kit. It’s always something I ‘need to do’.

Oh boy, that sounds scary. I live on the prairies and I don’t think there’s ever been an earthquake here. I’d probably be pretty freaked out. I don’t have a disaster kit really. I have an emergency kit with all our important papers and keep our cat carrier at arms reach. I should make a list of what to grab…like perscriptions, laptop, passcodes, etc. Thanks for reminding me. Be Safe.

Luckily we live in an area that doesn’t have earthquakes they always sound so scary when I hear about them. We do have tornado’s in the midwest every year and we do not have a disaster kit even though we should. We are happy you are all safe.

  11. Scary. Stay safe.
    Best wishes Molly
