Taranaki is well-known for dairying, Mt Taranaki and its yearly garden festivals. One plant that grows particularly well there is the rhododendron.
Mt Taranaki is often shourded in mist as it was when mummy went past it in the morning, but on way home, she turned a corner and there was the mountain in all its glory.
Mt Taranaki is a dead ringer for Mt Fuji and was used as a backdrop for Mt Fuji in the movie the Last Samurai. Mummy knows someone who worked on that movie as a wardrobe assistant. She said Tom Cruise had discovered the local fish and chip shop and was putting on so much weight during filming that they were forever having to let out his costumes. The mountain is 2518-metres-high(8,261 ft) and is an active volcano, which scientist believe is overdue for an eruption.
On her way home she took lots of photos of rhododendron growing on the side of the highway. Please note for our overseas readers, most state highways in New Zealand are only 2 lanes unless you are in the cities then they might be four lanes.
Now you can’t argue with Lonely Planet when they say Taranaki is a great place to visit. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/wanganui-chronicle/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503426&objectid=11740464
